Building contractor employees exposed to asbestos dust

Geoff Thomas and Son Ltd, a Bath building contractor, has been fined £5,000 for exposing two employees to asbestos dust in January 2013.

The workmen were exposed to asbestos dust when they demolished and replaced a basement ceiling of a residential property. The workmen used hand tools and also pulled parts of the ceiling down by hand. When the company identified that the ceiling may contain asbestos they sent the workmen on to other jobs without decontaminating their clothes or tools. It was later found that the ceiling did contain asbestos.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigations found that the company failed to make suitable and sufficient assessment for the presence of asbestos before the work started and they failed to prevent the spread of asbestos fibres.

Geoff Thomas and Son Ltd of Braysdown, Peasedown St John, Bath pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and was fined a total of £5,000 and ordered to pay costs of £637.
